US Experts Invited to Offer Input on Standards
Standards are living documents that are not meant to remain rigid in the face of new knowledge generated through research, observed performance, or real world data. IEC standards relative to wind turbine structures and their foundations (IEC 61400-1, 61400-6, 61400-28, etc.) are no exception. They undergo periodic updates every few years, as well as amendments when new information calls for more urgent edits.
US participation in the development of these international standards is through the US TAG (Technical Advisory Group) to TC-88 of the IEC. US experts wishing to play a formal role in this effort are expected to apply or be nominated for TAG membership which involves being a member of ARESCA and ANSI. Short of playing such a formal role, US experts may provide input through an existing TAG member who is tasked with coordinating a US mirror committee formed to collect such feedback on a specific IEC standard.
Civil Renewables’ President, Jomaa Ben Hassine, has been an active US TAG member for nearly two decades. He has contributed to the development of the ASCE/AWEA RP2011 (Recommended Practice for Compliance of Large Land-Based Wind Turbine Support Structures) published in 2011, and acted as US mirror committee coordinator in the development of IEC 61400-6 (Wind Energy Generation Systems, Part 6: Tower and Foundation Design Requirements) published in 2020. This latter standard is now undergoing revisions:
Amendment 1 (IEC 61400-6 AMD1) is currently in Committee Draft for Vote (CDV) status. IEC voting on this amendment closes on May 25, 2024.
IEC 61400-6 Edition 2 is being elaborated. It will include new edits, as well as the approved AMD1 text.
Jomaa has been tasked again with coordinating the US mirror committee for the above IEC 61400-6 activities. Jomaa is inviting US experts from different stakeholders interested in the above activities to contact him directly (j.ben-hassine at civilrenewables dot com) or through his LinkedIn page to be added to an MS Teams sites where the documents are shared and discussed to gather US feedback.
