POWERGEN 2024: Repowering Wind Project Insights

Technical aspects of repowering wind projects

On January 24, 2024, we had the honor to talk about repowering wind projects at the 2024 version of the POWERGEN conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. This event brought together industry leaders, experts, and various stakeholders from around the globe to discuss the latest advancements and challenges in the power generation sector. The session was part of a well-attended and executed track titled “O&M and EPC Considerations for Utility-Scale Solar and Wind.” This track provided a overview of the operational, maintenance, and engineering, procurement, and construction aspects critical to the success and sustainability of large-scale renewable energy projects.

Civil Renewables’ President, Jomaa Ben Hassine, contributed to the session with an insightful presentation, which touched on the technical considerations for repowering and life extension of wind projects and addressed addressed key issues that are crucial for the longevity and efficiency of wind energy infrastructures. His presentation highlighted the importance of foundation condition assessments and estimates of remaining useful life (RUL), which are pivotal in determining the viability and economic feasibility of repowering existing wind installations.

Jomaa elaborated on the various methodologies used for assessing the condition of wind turbine foundations, emphasizing the need for thorough evaluations to ensure structural integrity and safety. He also discussed advanced techniques for estimating RUL, which involve a combination of historical data analysis, on-site inspections, and predictive modeling. These techniques enable project developers and operators to make informed decisions regarding the refurbishment or replacement of wind turbine foundations, ultimately optimizing their performance and extending operational lifespan of the wind farm.

The session not only provided valuable knowledge but also fostered engaging discussions and networking opportunities among participants. Attendees left with a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in repowering wind projects and the innovative solutions available to address them. Overall, the 2024 POWERGEN conference proved to be a significant platform for learning, networking and advancing the future of power generation.
